Bluetail, Over Two Years Later and 600M Aircraft Records

The Story of Bluetail

People often ask us why we started Bluetail. Well, interesting story. My co-founder, Roberto Guerrieri, and I, who I’ve known for decades, asked ourselves why the aviation industry had not yet moved to standardized digital record keeping. We wondered why a company or individual would spend hundreds of thousands, if not tens of millions of dollars, on an airplane and then trust the keeping of its valuable operational and maintenance to paper logbooks. Then store said logbooks in corrugated Banker’s Boxes where any number of bad things can happen to them – read more about it here.

It seemed even more unbelievable especially given the advances we’ve seen happen in the tech space. And, as a pilot myself with a minor degree in aviation, if we combined our technology experience, the answer seemed clear–we could change the world (well, at least the aviation part of it).

A $12 Banker’s Box is no place to keep a $60M business jet.

The more we thought about it, the more sense it made. With all the technology found in modern aircraft, the idea of relying on paper seemed like a giant step back to wooden propellers and canvass-covered wings. We’ve all heard horror stories of aircraft records or 8130 documents being damaged or lost. The cost to replace that information has led to the permanent grounding of perfectly good aircraft. Oh, the humanity!

We Knew We Could Do More and Better

Of course, situations like this weren’t news to anyone. We had been keeping tabs on the tech side of the aviation industry and knew there were already companies who would “digitize” aircraft records. But these were nothing more than trading paper for digital copies of pages – yes, they were digital, but in name only. They didn’t take advantage of any of the benefits offered by advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, optical character recognition, machine learning, cloud-based storage, and Amazon’s revolutionary web capabilities –to name a few.

So, we decided to take the best of those modern digital technologies and develop a software as a service (SAAS) application that would not only simplify the keeping, storage, sharing, and security of aircraft records but provide growth potential that would genuinely disrupt a vital part of the business aviation industry. In fact, our platform now handles and makes searchable over 600M aircraft records.

Two plus years and turning heads.

In the last two years, we’ve gone from “What’s Bluetail?” to providing our services for hundreds of private and business aircraft – ranging from single-engine Cessnas to ACJs and BBJs – with a combined worth of billions of dollars. Having some of the largest private, charter, and corporate flight departments put their trust in us is pretty impressive and we’re grateful.

But why have they chosen Bluetail, you ask?

Well, there are a lot of reasons. One of the biggest is that they can now do things that, prior to Bluetail, were simply not possible.

For example, with aircraft flying all over all the time and maintenance happening anywhere at any time, our customers and supporting partners like MROs can now have instant access to searchable, sharable, and secure digital documents like wiring diagrams and supplementary maintenance manuals in an instant. That takes a lot of stress off of AOG situations.

Should You “Bluetail”?

With the ability to do things that have never been possible before, Bluetail is ushering in a new way of looking at how records are kept, managed, and stored. That was our goal, and it seems to be catching on.
